The Strange History of Mortis Mansion:
he tale is one of Bella Rigor and Algor Mortis, two handsome and dashing individuals, in their day. You see, Algor was a famous composer and Bella a renowned vocalist. Upon hearing her voice during an audition, Algor felt that she had the talent to bring life to his music like no one he’d ever met before. Likewise, when she sang his music, her spirit soared. Upon marriage, the two spent long hours in Algor’s music room at Mortis Mansion, locked away together singing and composing. They had three children together, but did not spend much time with them, as they were busily devoted to their music, traveling and performing from Broadway to Vienna. The children were raised by their extended relatives who also lived at Mortis Mansion. With plenty of space to spare, Bella and Algor took pride in sharing their good fortunes with their nearest kin, and opened the mansion to any relatives who needed a place to stay, including Bella’s parents and several aunts and uncles.
And so all was well, until one day the unimaginable happened: Bella suddenly fell ill and died. It was Algor who’d found her. To his despair, neither he nor the finest physicians could find the cause of her illness. She was just gone. Algor was so distraught that he refused to bury her, and gradually slid into a deep state of depression and denial, insisting on keeping her enshrined in his music room. There, he would play endlessly, hoping (under some warped notion) that he could bring her back to him. The whole family became filled with grief, made only worse by Algor’s state of mind, until they, too, became obsessed with bringing her back to them. Bella’s mother, Grandma Rigor, spent hours in the kitchen with her sister, brewing resurrection potions. Grandpa Rigor, a scientist of sorts, was sure that electricity was the key, and conducted endless experiments in his lab, often causing power outages in the mansion. Algor’s brother, Uncle Livor the Archeologist, searched the world for ancient secrets and was always bringing home strange and exotic things from his travels, such as dinosaur bones and artifacts from Egyptian tombs. But the children were devastated by their mother’s death the most. The eldest daughter, Lilith, sought out the vampires, sure that if she could just sink her teeth into her mother that the venom would change her, and bring her immortality. The middle child, Demonica, spent countless hours alone in her room, making no noise (with the exception of the television), and what went through her mind, few knew.
The strangest thing was that even as the Mortis’ were all trying to bring Bella back, she had not REALLY left them. Her ghost had been there all along, trying desperately to communicate with her family. But no one could hear her, that is, except the youngest daughter, Veronica. Everyone in the family knew that Veronica often wandered the halls of the mansion, talking with her imaginary friends – so they didn’t believe her when she said she had talked to her mother. But Veronica was sure she had a way to bring her mother back – as did the others.
However, despite the efforts of the rest of the family, the father, Algor, guarded Bella’s corpse so tirelessly that no one could get close enough to try their methods. He stayed with her day and night, often sleeping with his head down on the keyboard. Even then, the slightest disturbance would wake him, and he would let no one near her. Grandma Rigor had to bring him his food, and even then he hardly ate nor spoke. Bills began mounting up for the Mortis’ since they entered into their obsessive search for ways to revive Bella, and so Grandpa Rigor decided to open the Mansion up to tourists in order to help the family make ends-meet.
Now its your turn to try to solve the puzzle. You've been invited to tour the mansion and experience its many curiosities. Can any members of this odd family succeed at reviving Bella? What do you believe?
Attention: all civilians! By order of General Waller we’ve been commanded to round up any and all survivors who still show no signs of the Infection, caused by the Cordyceps Fungus. If you are healthy, step forward. You folks look healthy enough to me. Tell me, are you feeling okay? Have you encountered anyone with the following symptoms?
The Cordyceps Fungus is a rapidly spreading fungus that entangles itself in the brain, taking over reasoning and thought-control and severally impairing the motor-cortex. Infected persons cannot control their urges and will want to bite or scratch others to spread the fungus infection. As it progresses, the fungus sprouts out of the head in a vine-like growth, resulting in severe pain and eventual death. We are issuing a National Code Red. The whole community is now under extreme lock-down and all un-infected persons are being asked to report to the nearest National Guard military compound. It is no longer safe for you to be in the streets. Drastic measures are being taken to eliminate the spread. Because we have no cure, General Waller has issued an extermination order: we are to shoot any and all hostile civilians showing extreme symptoms of aggression. Please follow me to decontamination and processing.
What do you ask me? You wish to enter the Lower World? No, stay far from this dark place, for it is a place filled with creatures that shrink from the light; the bat to the ceiling, the spider to his crevice, and the snake to his hole. These you’ve seen and so think you can withstand, but there are other things here as well, things that are not natural; beings that have lived in the dark so long they have mutated into something strange and horrible; creatures with an inhuman power of control over others. Smart too, smart enough to set traps for those unsuspecting victims who wonder into this forsaken place. After all, they must have food for the… oh, I’ve said too much! I warn you, do not go there! Those who look in its eyes never return! What to expect: You, one glow stick, total darkness.
